In recent years much of the rebuilding in the disaster torn nation of Haiti has used wood, a previously unused material. There are great benefits to using wood; it's lightweight, cheap and easy to work with but this comes at a cost. Wood burns and the sudden influx of wood structures has exposed yet another need in an already needy place - fire fighting. Luckily there is a group of charitable local volunteers who have sourced a couple of used fire trucks, fire fighting consultants, and the materials to build a firehouse designed pro bono by OMNIA Architects. The organizational effort is complete and the gang is preparing to leave for Haiti next week. Stay tuned for photos of the firehouse as it takes shape.
