Home for the holidays: making your home more magical this holiday season.

With the holidays fast approaching, it is an exciting time of year for friends and family —and your home — because small DIY projects and mini home renovations can make your home even more joyous.

Your kitchen will be a focal point over the next few weeks, so why not give it a boost? A new tile backsplash can set the stage for many festive evenings. If tile is not in the budget this time of year, inexpensive tin ceiling tiles, stainless steel, chalkboard or magnetic paint can be just as eye-catching. New kitchen lighting or a new fixture over the dining table can also brighten up your holiday meal.

Hardware is always an easy fix. If you have plain knobs, consider color or material. If you have a doorknob, look for a modern door handle. Of course, as you cook, chat and cater to your guests, space in the kitchen will be at a premium. Consider putting in an island or adding pullout cabinet shelves. Or opt for something less permanent such as an inexpensive rolling island that can be shifted out of the way when the holiday season is over.

Changing the color of a room can cozy up any space. A splash of color can work wonders either with paint, or with fabrics and pillows.  Associate Noura Soliman suggests layering your furniture with her choice of earthy fall colored throws and pillows of orange, brown and sage green.

As winter roars in, Associate Lauri Sanders loves to decorate her craftsman home in the colors of red and green, using candles, decorative pillows and small throw rugs.  She loves bringing in natural elements from the outside.  Evergreen branches, branches with berries and/or bare branches spray painted white or gold, can spruce up your home and/or your fireplace mantle.

Also consider adding picture molding, crown molding or baseboard. It is an easy DIY project that can breathe new life to any room. The same can be said for new lighting. White light, new lamps or even new shades can add a fresh new look — especially if you select fun, festive shades for the holiday.

Here is an easy way to give your guests a warm welcome and add curb appeal. Invest in a new door or simply paint your old one. Also repaint the exterior trim, replace the house number or mailbox and install new outdoor lighting. There is no better way to say “Happy Holidays” than a warm, friendly exterior.
